(1867–1933) Novelist and playwright, a member of a large and ambitious legal family in many ways resembling the one depicted in The *Forsyte Saga. His plays were realistic dramas on contemporary social problems, the best known being Strife (1909), about the effects of a strike. He was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1932.
