Henry Fuseli
|
|
(Johann Heinrich Füssli, 1741–1825) Swiss painter who settled in London in 1779. His feverish imagination and sinuous line make him an important figure in the early *Romantic movement. Women in exotic clothing and scenes from *Shakespeare and *Milton were among his favourite subjects. His style has much in common with that of William *Blake, 16 years his junior. In spite of Blake's hatred of the Royal Academy, where Fuseli was for many years a professor, Fuseli won the friendship and approval of the younger man, who wrote of him: The only man that e'er I knew Who did not make me want to spew.
