(Charles Burgess Fry, 1872–1956) Perhaps Britain's greatest ever all-round sportsman, doing much to enhance the *amateur tradition. He won blues at Oxford for athletics, soccer and cricket, and later represented England at all three. For 21 years he was equal holder of the world long-jump record. But his greatest achievements were in *cricket, playing first for Sussex and later for Hampshire in addition to 26 Test appearances for England. His six consecutive centuries in first-class innings in 1901 remains a record still unbeaten (though equalled by Bradman in 1938–9 and Procter in 1970–71, and closely challenged by Lara in 1994). It is said that he declined an invitation to become king of Albania.
