James Frazer
|
|
(1854–1941, kt 1914) Scottish anthropologist, whose Golden Bough (2 vols 1890, enlarged to 12 vols by the 3rd edn of 1907–15) is a massive compilation of other people's researches into ritual and religious customs. It remains a rich and fascinating treasure house, though Frazer's central thesis (that human thought processes have progressed from magic through religion to science) is no longer accepted.
