HMS Dreadnought
|
|
British battleship, launched in 1906. Displacing 17,900 tons and capable of 21 knots, it was the first of the massive vessels, armed exclusively with big guns, which dominated naval warfare until the end of World War II. 'Dreadnought' became a general term for ships of this class, but the name has had a longer and ongoing place in British naval history; ships called Dreadnought fought against the Armada and at Trafalgar, and a submarine was launched with that name in 1960.
