Foxe's Book of Martyrs
|
|
The name commonly used for Acts and Monuments of these Latter and Perilous Days, a compilation by John Foxe (1516–87) of the frequently gory deaths suffered by Protestant martyrs. The book, steadily growing in size, was reissued many times after its first Latin edition (Strasbourg, 1554). It was first published in English in 1563, by then including the local martyrs in the reign of *Mary I. Widely read in the 16–17C, and more dramatic than accurate in its approach, it contributed greatly to a long-lasting anti-Catholic hysteria in Britain.
