Football League
|
|
Competition on a points system (nowadays 3 for a win, 1 for a draw) launched in 1888 for professional clubs, the *Football Association having made a principle of amateurism. There were 12 clubs in the 1888–9 season (won by Preston North End). A 2nd division was added in 1892, a 3rd in 1920 and a 4th in 1958. But these long-standing arrangements were altered by the creation in 1992 of a Premier League for the top clubs.
