Buildings of no practical purpose, constructed purely to amuse or delight the viewer. Large numbers were created in Britain in the 18C. They were a feature of the new informal fashion in *landscape gardening, in which a succession of pleasing vistas greeted the visitor and part of the pleasure of a walk round the grounds was chancing upon a hermit's cell, a grotto, a ruined Gothic tower, a classical temple or a pagoda.
