The phrase used, according to Thomas Cromwell, by Henry VIII when he set eyes on his fourth bride, *Anne of Cleves; he had gone in disguise to get a first glimpse of her as she journeyed from the coast to London. The tradition that he believed himself to have been misled by *Holbein's portrait is not mentioned until the 18C.
