(72,000 in 1991) Town on the river Don in South Yorkshire, dating back to the Roman settlement of Danum but deriving its character from its modern industrial role as a coal-mining and railway centre. It is known above all for racing, for it is here that the oldest classic, the *St Leger, has been run since 1776; the earliest grandstand at the course, designed by John Carr, dates from that same year. The Mansion House (1745–48, one of the earliest in the country) is by James Paine.
