Five Towns
|
|
A term for the Potteries in Staffordshire, where the ceramic industry was concentrated in five closely linked towns (Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke-upon-Trent and Longton), which were merged in 1910 as *Stoke-on-Trent. The phrase is associated in particular with Arnold *Bennett, who set many of his novels in the five towns, renaming them respectively Turnhill, Bursley, Hanbridge, Knype and Longshaw.
