Fitzwilliam Museum
|
|
(Cambridge) Founded in 1816 by the bequest of the collection and library of Lord Fitzwilliam (1745–1816). He also left money for the building, designed by George Basevi (1794–1845), which opened in 1848. The breadth of Fitzwilliam's interests made his own collection museum-like in its scope, and extensive additions along the same lines have formed what has been called the 'finest small museum in Europe'. Among the antiquities, ceramics, musical manuscripts and ivories, it is the paintings which are perhaps the most impressive of all, including superb Venetian works of the 16C.
