'fit for heroes'

The promise of a land fit for heroes, offered to the nation after the appalling sacrifices of World War I, was far from fulfilled in the decades of the *General Strike and the *Depression. It was made by *Lloyd George in a speech of November 1918: 'What is our task? To make Britain a fit country for heroes to live in.'
