Fishbourne Roman Palace
|
|
(2km/1m W of Chichester) The largest Roman building to have been discovered in Britain. The find was made in 1960 when a water main was being dug. Excavations revealed the remains of a palace and its gardens covering 4ha/10ac, dating from the 1st century AD and believed to have belonged to Cogidubnus, the ruler of a local British tribe who collaborated with the invading Romans and was suitably rewarded. The palace, which was destroyed by fire in the late 3C, had superb mosaic floors – in particular the so-called 'dolphin mosaic', with its centrepiece of Cupid riding a dolphin.
