The name given to the collected edition of 36 plays by *Shakespeare, published in 1623 by two of his fellow actors (John Heminge 1556–1630, Henry Condell d. 1627). The volume was printed by William Jaggard (d. 1623) and includes commemorative verses by, among others, Ben *Jonson. Its title-page engraving, by Martin Droeshout, is the only surviving portrait of Shakespeare with a good claim to be a reasonable likeness.
Another edition, the Second Folio, was published in 1632, to be followed by a third and fourth in 1663 and 1685. About half the plays had previously been printed as separate *quartos.
