Fingal's Cave
|
|
The best-known cave on *Staffa, some 69m/76yd long and with its roof formed of straight-sided basalt columns. The floor of the cave is well below sea level even at low tide. Mendelssohn visited Staffa in 1829 and his Hebrides Overture (first performed in London in 1832) soon became known as Fingal's Cave. Fingal was a pseudo-legendary Scottish hero, invented in the 18C in one of the greatest of British literary frauds (see *Ossian).
