'finest hour'
|
|
The climax of a peroration to the House of Commons on 18 June 1940 (coincidentally the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo), in which *Churchill warned that the *Battle of Britain was about to begin and that failure would mean a new Dark Age for Europe. 'Let us therefore', he concluded, 'brace ourselves to our duties and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years men will still say, "This was their finest hour"'.
