Financial Times
Britain's leading financial daily newspaper. It was founded in 1888, and in 1893 adopted the pink paper which subsequently became a distinguishing mark (at the time another newspaper was already famous for this colour, the Sporting Times, popularly known as the 'Pink 'Un'). In 1945 the paper merged with its only serious rival in the City, the Financial News, founded in 1884; it was actually the News which bought the Times, but the latter had a larger circulation (not to mention its famous pink paper), so its name was kept.

The present owners, Pearson, bought the Financial Times in 1957. By then it was broadening its range and had introduced an arts page which won a high reputation for the quality of its critics. Today the Financial Times reaches an international daily readership, being printed – in all cases on pink paper – in Germany, France, the USA and Japan in addition to Britain.
