Ballet of 1789 by Jean Dauberval, known now in Britain in the version of 1960 choreographed by *Ashton (to music of Hérold, adapted by John Lanchbery). A mix of rustic romance and comedy, it tells the story of Lise, whose love for Colas is until the last minute frustrated by the efforts of her mother, Widow Simone (a travesti role, danced by a man), to marry her off to the half-witted but wealthy Alain.
