Fiji

Member of the *Commonwealth from 1970 to 1987. It is an archipelago in the southwest Pacific, consisting of more than 800 islands of various sizes. It was in a state of anarchy in 1874 when the paramount chief, Cakobau, invited Britain to assume sovereignty. Fiji was a crown colony until independence in 1970. After two military coups in 1987, the country allowed its membership of the Commonwealth to lapse.
