The 'Fighting Téméraire'

Tugged to her last Berth to be broken up (1838, National Gallery) Painting by *Turner of a great gilded man-of-war towed by a small black steamer, belching smoke, against the background of a brilliant sunset. The Téméraire, launched at Chatham in 1798, became known as The Fighting Téméraire after distinguishing herself at Trafalgar. Sold for scrap in 1838, Turner shows her being towed up the Thames to London docks.
