Fastnet Race
|
|
Yachting race over a 975km/605m offshore course from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, round Fastnet Rock (off the southwest coast of Ireland), and back to Plymouth. Established in 1925, it is held every other August, during Cowes week, with a wide range of boats competing. The race of 1979 was a reminder that the dangers are real; appalling weather capsized many yachts and caused 15 deaths. Since 1957 the race has included a top class of custom-built racing yachts, for it doubles now as the final event of the *Admiral's Cup.
