(1678–1707) Irish playwright who added a much-needed dash of realism to the artificial conventions of *Restoration comedy. He was born in Londonderry and moved to London in 1697, achieved lasting success only with the plays written in the final two years of his life, The *Recruiting Officer (1706) and The *Beaux' Stratagem (1707).
