Intricate roof pattern introduced in England in the late 14C, the earliest major example being the cloisters of *Gloucester Cathedral. The ribs spray out from the base of the vault in a fan-like pattern which is decorative rather than structural; it is in effect an extension of the stone tracery in the windows, characteristic of the later stages of *Gothic architecture.
