(27km/17m SW of Perth) Small town which grew up round a favourite palace and hunting lodge of the early Stuart kings. *James II began to build the palace in the mid-15C; a century later *James V gave it French Renaissance trappings at the time of his marriage to the daughter of the French king, *Francis I. From the early 18C the palace became derelict. What is seen today is largely the restoration carried out in the late 19C by the 3rd marquess of Bute.
