The Eve of St Agnes
|
|
(1820) Medievalist poem by *Keats based on the legend that on St Agnes' Eve a virgin may see and entertain her lover in a vision. In this case Madeline, hoping for such delights, wakes to find her beloved Porphyro in person beside her bed; together they elope. The subject greatly appealed to the *Pre-Raphaelites, being painted by Holman *Hunt and by Arthur Hughes.
