(1922–92, kt 1969) Welsh baritone whose career was centred on Covent Garden, where he made his debut in 1948 and eventually gave more than a thousand performances; abroad, it was probably in San Francisco and Chicago that he was a most regular visitor. He was best known for his comic roles, in particular Mozart's Figaro and Papageno, Verdi's Falstaff, Wagner's Beckmesser and Bottom in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream. He gave his farewell performance at Covent Garden in 1984 in a part which he had made his own in his later years, Donizetti's Dulcamara in L'Elisir d'Amore.
