(1851–1941, kt 1911) Archaeologist who discovered and excavated *Knossos, the palace of the rulers of Crete from about 3000 to 1200 BC. He also coined the term *Minoan (from Minos, the legendary king of Crete) to describe this early Greek civilization. The site yielded a large number of clay tablets in the script known as *Linear B.
