Evangelicals
|
|
Term used for those in the *Church of England who place maximum emphasis on an essentially Protestant theme – that each believer's salvation depends solely on his or her personal faith and on the authority of scripture, without benefit of ritual, sacrament or good works. This wing of the church derives from the spiritual revival led by John *Wesley in the 18C (Methodist and Evangelical were used interchangeably in the early 19C). The emergence of *Anglo-Catholicism in the mid-19C brought the difference of opinion sharply into focus, and Evangelicals and Anglo-Catholics have remained two contrasting strands within the Anglican Church.
