Erewhon
|
|
(1872) Novel by Samuel *Butler in which the narrator's experiences in a remote land are used to satirize arrangements nearer home. The title, an anagram of 'nowhere', links it with the 'no place' of *Utopia. The narrator eventually escapes in a balloon with his host's beautiful daughter. In the sequel (Erewhon revisited 1901), it is revealed that the narrator's name is Higgs. He returns to Erewhon 20 years later to find that the manner of his previous departure has given him the status of a god.
