Enniskillen
|
|
(formerly Inniskilling, 11,000 in 1991) County town of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. Established as a garrison town on an island in the river Erne, it held out in 1689 against *James II and retains a strongly Protestant character. It was the home of two famous regiments, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the Inniskilling Dragoons. By contrast the Portora Royal School includes Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett among its past pupils. Enniskillen was subjected to a terrorist attack in 1987 when an IRA bomb exploded among a crowd gathered for a Remembrance Day service, killing 11 and injuring 63.
