(London W1) Independent organization, with branches and members all over the world, devoted to fostering international understanding and friendship through a shared use of the English language. Founded in 1918, its original purpose was as a bond between Britain and the USA; this was soon extended to the Commonwealth and in recent years to many other countries, with the increasing acceptance of English as the international language. The ESU's main activities are social and cultural events, and the providing of scholarships for young people to travel.
