The signal flown from the masts of HMS *Victory before the Battle of *Trafalgar. The signals lieutenant, John Pasco, wrote later that *Nelson asked him to send the message starting with 'England confides' but that he persuaded the admiral to substitute 'expects' – because it had its own flag in the signals book, whereas 'confides' would have to be spelt out.
