Embankment

Road along the north bank of the Thames from Westminster to Blackfriars, built out into the river by *Bazalgette in 1864–70. It was designed to accommodate the District line, an addition to London's new *underground, in the layer immediately below the road; and below the underground lay Bazalgette's new sewer. Its full name is the Victoria Embankment, distinguishing it from two others built further upstream, also by Bazalgette – the Albert Embankment (1866–70, on the Lambeth bank) and the Chelsea Embankment (1871–4).
