(1859–1939) Pioneer in the study of human sexual behaviour. He wrote many books for general readers, such as Man and Woman (1894) and The Erotic Rights of Women (1918), but his major scientific work – Studies in the Psychology of Sex (7 vols, 1897–1928) – was for many years published only in the USA, after a bookseller had been prosecuted in Britain in 1898 for stocking the first volume.
