(b. 1926) Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1952; elder child of *George VI and of Queen Elizabeth, now the *Queen Mother. On 20 November 1947 she married in Westminster Abbey her distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten, who was created Duke of Edinburgh on the eve of the wedding. They were together in Kenya in the Sagana Hunting Lodge when news reached them, on 6 February 1952, that her father had died of a heart attack.

Queen Elizabeth has been the very model of a constitutional monarch, much in evidence and always non-controversial. Her reign has seen the completion of the process by which the *British empire has transformed itself into the *Commonwealth, a family of nations in which she has taken great interest and pride.
