Britain's close involvement with Egypt began in 1875, when the bankrupt Egyptian khedive sold most of his *Suez Canal shares to the British government. British intervention to control a series of uprisings led to effective occupation of the country from 1883 to 1914. In spite of the British presence, Egypt was still nominally a part of the *Ottoman empire. But in 1914, with Turkey on the opposing side in *World War I, Britain declared Egypt a British protectorate. In 1922 the country became an independent monarchy, which lasted until the second king, Farouk, was deposed by the army in 1952. The disastrous culmination of this long involvement was the *Suez crisis.
