(1882–1944, kt 1930) Astrophysicist who did pioneering work into the internal structure of stars and discovered the relationship between mass and luminosity (The Internal Constitution of the Stars 1926). His researches provided powerful evidence for the theory of relativity, and his literary skills made him an effective popularizer of physics.
