Easter Rising
|
|
(24–29 Apr. 1916) The most dramatic of the events in the struggle for *Home Rule in Ireland. The uprising had been planned by several of the radical nationalist groups and it began with the seizing of the General Post Office in Dublin's great thoroughfare, O'Connell Street. From its pillared portico Patrick *Pearse read out a proclamation announcing the birth of the Irish Republic. Sniping and shelling in the streets lasted until the end of the week, when the rebels surrendered. Pearse, James *Connolly and a dozen others were executed, their martyrdom (unlike their uprising) serving to create much sympathy for their cause.
