Dunster Castle
(5km/3m SE of Minehead) Standing out boldly on a wooded hillside in Somerset, Dunster was lived in by the Luttrell family for nearly six centuries (1405–1979). Some 17C interiors survive, with richly plastered ceilings, but so do the less fortunate alterations to the exterior, done in the 19C. The castle is traditionally visited on the afternoon of May Day by the hobby horse from neighbouring *Minehead.
On the river Avill, beneath the castle, the 18C Dunster watermill was restored in 1979 and is now back in business (and on show) as a working mill, producing wholewheat flour.
