Daphne du Maurier

(1907–89, DBE 1969) Novelist who lived most of her life in Cornwall and reached a very wide audience with her thriller-romances set in the West Country. The best known is *Rebecca, but its narrative skills are equalled by Jamaica Inn (1936), Frenchman's Creek (1941) and My Cousin Rachel (1951). Her chilling short story 'The Birds' was filmed in 1963 by Alfred Hitchcock. She was the daughter of the actor-manager Gerald du Maurier (1873–1934) and the granddaughter of George *du Maurier.
