D-notice
|
|
A notice sent to the media by the government's Defence, Press and Broadcasting Committee (established for the press in 1912), putting a block on the publication of certain information in the interests of security; the prohibition does not have legal force but has been traditionally accepted. In recent years the D-notice procedure has been controversial because of suspicions that the security in question may sometimes be that of the government rather than the nation. It was officially under review at the end of 1992.
