Dixon of Dock Green

|
(BBC 1955–76) The first and the longest-lasting British police series on television. George Dixon, an avuncular old copper in London's East End, first appeared in a 1949 film, The Blue Lamp; in the story he trained a young recruit and was then killed in a shoot-out. The character was revived for the television series (written by Ted Willis, 1918–92) and was played by the same actor, Jack Warner (1895–1981), who was in his eighties when the series ended. His catch phrase, 'Evening all', began each programme.
