(Crockford's Clerical Directory) The Who's Who of Anglican clergy in Britain, with an entry for every clergyman in the Church of England, the Church in Wales, the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Church of Ireland. First published in 1858, it now appears every other year. It is named after John Crockford, about whom little is known; even his role in launching the directory is uncertain. In 1987 a controversy and a tragedy brought Crockford to the attention of many who had never previously heard of it. An unsigned preface in that year's edition took the unprecedented step of criticizing the archbishop of Canterbury. A week after publication, and after much furore, it was announced that the author was a clergyman, Gareth Bennett, and that he had committed suicide the previous day.
