The Diary of a Nobody
|
|
(1892) Fictional diary of a suburban anti-hero, Charles Pooter, serialized in Punch from April 1891. It begins when he and his wife Carrie move into their new London house (The Laurels, Brickfield Terrace, Holloway), where they are soon joined by their appalling son Lupin – markedly lacking in respect for his father. Mr Pooter's constant fear of social embarrassment, a fear usually justified, is suggested with such delightful comic detail that the book somehow avoids being condescending. It was written by the brothers George and Weedon Grossmith (1847–1912; 1854–1919), with illustrations by Weedon.
