and DFM (Distinguished Flying Cross and Medal) Decorations for gallantry when flying in an engagement against an enemy; the DFC is given to officers and warrant officers, and the DFM to lower ranks. The AFC and AFM (Air Force Cross and Medal) were instituted in the same year (1918) for acts of courage when flying in any other context.
