|
(1842–1923, kt 1904) Scottish physicist and chemist, known in particular for his research at very low temperatures. To keep liquid gases cool, he used a surrounding vacuum as insulation. The Dewar flask became more widely familiar in its household application as the Thermos flask. In 1889 he and Frederick Abel (1827–1902) together developed cordite as an explosive.
