Derby

(223,000 in 1991) City in central England, on the river Derwent. It was the furthest point south in the advance into England in 1745–6 of Charles Edward *Stuart. In the same decade it began making the product for which it is most famous, *Derby porcelain. From 1907 to 1939 all *Rolls-Royce cars were produced here.
All Saints church, which has been Derby's cathedral since 1927, has a 16C tower and a nave added by James Gibbs in 1722–7. The Museum and Art Gallery (1876–9) has an outstanding collection of paintings by the local artist, Joseph *Wright, while the Royal Crown Derby Museum (attached to the working porcelain factory) displays examples of the city's wares through two and a half centuries.
