Erasmus Darwin
|
|
(1731–1802) Physician and poet, remembered in particular as an early theorist on the subject which his grandson, Charles *Darwin, made his own – evolution. His conclusions, stated in Zoonomia (1794–6), were those which his grandson discredited, for he argued that species can adapt to new surroundings and then pass on their acquired characteristics to their offspring (a theory more often associated with the later work of Lamarck). Another grandson was Francis *Galton.
