(6000 in 1991) Ancient port and now a yachting resort on the west bank of the estuary of the river Dart in Devon. The castle guarding the entrance to the estuary was begun in 1481 and was designed so that a chain could be stretched across to the companion fort on the opposite bank at Kingswear. The town's museum, housed in the 17C Butterwalk, is particularly strong in models of ships. The Britannia Royal Naval College, an imposing building by Aston Webb on the hillside above the town, has been since 1905 a preliminary training college for officers in the Royal Navy; previously they had studied on board HMS Britannia, moored in the Dart.
